Gonzo out

Huh? Why now? I must admit - after all that he's sat on his hands for in the past few months - I haven't a clue as to why he would quit this morning; and he gave us no reason at all in his press conference, not even that he wants to spend more time with his family. All I can say is that he clearly wanted to do this while Congress was out of session.

More later, I assume.

Let me add this. Glenn Greenwald makes an excellent case at Salon that the Democrats should fight tooth and nail to deny the confirmation of a new Attorney General to anyone but a truly independent (read: not Michael Chertoff) candidate. This position - the Attorney General - really holds the keys to the kingdom, if you will. IE, if you get somebody in there who's not beholden to Bush, we may actually start to see (a) some respect for the Constitution in matters like warrantless wiretapping, and (b) some genuine investigations of the administration's malfeasance to date.

However. As suggested over at Talking Points Memo, Bush may seek to throw in a new AG on the quick as a recess appointment while Congress is out of session for August. Indeed, that may be the real reason for Gonzales' timing in quitting.

Wow, anyone left but Condi ?

I think you're right on the recess appointment theory. Sounds like a great strategy for a guy who does whatever he can to slip around the edges of what's legally permissible to retain his grip.

...oh, talking points link?

reading news report... Denying the resignation rumors up to the last minute brings to mind the way corporations lay people off of their jobs.

"Everything's fine!"
"Everything's fine!"
"Everything's fine!"
"Oh, by the way, you're fired."

Lying is just fine when you're a... grown-up ?

It took a look-see to find, but I added the TPM link.

I'm astonished to see you'd actually check my blog for political news during real time on a Monday morning. The pressure!
